Got the new tires on the Miata finally! Also nice to have 15 inch wheels on the car again instead of 16s. The wheels the previous owner put on the car were fine, they were tasteful at least. But 16s just weigh more and have worse tire choices. Since I have more than one set of 15s laying around it made sense to just switch over.
With the 16s:
With the 15s:
They really dont look all that different which is the funny part. I actually took a pic with one on the front and one on the back. And couldnt tell at first that they were mismatched:
Im waffling about having my alignment adjusted since im not planning on tracking the car. I just feel bad about having spent a good chunk of money on the alignment and corner balance only to do 2 track days last year and then proceed to trash my tires because of it. I could certainly have the toe taken out and that would probably resolve my tire eating concern. But then again I just love how it handles right now...
Anyways, Im gonna ignore that concern for now and enjoy some driving off into the sunset since I havent driven the miata in over a week. And the couple weeks before that I was tip toeing on trashed sketchy tires. 200TW tires and warm summer evenings mean its time to drive and enjoy some of that exhaust note. Well as much as you can enjoy a 1.8L four cylinder making noise... If I had the money, LFX swap would be in order!!

Like the new wheels. I’m a bit surprised tire selection is better at 15 than 16. By the time my S40 was totaled there was really nothing remotely desirable widely available for its 15 inch wheels. G ranted I’m sure Miata-sized performance tires are more widely available than tires for my Dutch Mitsubishi, but I’d still have expected their to be more choice at 16 inches than 15.

Sidewall is a good thing.

Yeah its a miata thing lol. Particularly since 15 inch is the stock size for NA and anything other than the higher trim NBs. And since I only care about performance tires, it is a niche area to begin with. Sure there were some options in 16 inch, my actual tire choice included. But it was just more expensive.

It’s ludicrous to me all of the newer cars with 30 or 35 for sidewall. Especially since they’re often much bigger diameters too. Every pothole would scare me. I mean sure I’m still scared of potholes but it’s because of the threat of my oil pan being ripped off not my tires. I will intentionally hit things with the tire to avoid getting scraped by a rock.
